ROMANIAN EDUCATION(15.06.2007) |

However, 8th graders, who finished classes last week, still face a challenge – the national exams, scheduled for Monday. 12th graders will have to sit for their Baccalaureate in 10 days’ time, which will begin with one of the most important tests, the Romanian language and the literature oral examination. This school year has seen many events, such as the replacement of the Education minister and an increased number of cases of violence at school. Upon the request of Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, education minister Cristian Adomnitei and interior minister Cristian David have prepared a set of measures to combat violence.
These include the hiring of more school councillors, ensuring that there is one councillor for every 400 students. The school year that has just come to an end also brought in some novelties. This has been the first year when, following complaints filed by teachers with parliament, the education ministry proposed that several history and Romanian language and literature textbooks be withdrawn, due to the quality of their content. 7th grade single-subject tests have also been introduced for the first time.
The education minister believes these tests are also needed for other secondary school classes. National exam subjects have been available on the internet since late February. The Romanian education system has long faced a number of tough problems, including a lack of respect for teachers’ authority. Teachers often have to cope with indifferent and arrogant students. This is one of the conclusions of the seminar entitled ‘School between morality and violence.
Towards an ethical code for pedagogical instructors’ recently held in Bucharest. Many teachers have been insulted or even hit by their students. This is one reason for the drawing up of an ethical Code, expected to define the teacher-student relationship, the grounds for the authority of teachers, the vocabulary used in this relationship, the teacher’s appearance and their training. A parents’ code was also proposed, which should provide for the latter’s obligation to maintain ties with the school itself. (Leyla Keamil)
