The first edition of the International Radio Orchestras Festival, called “RadiRo” has come to an end in Bucharest. The festival, highly appreciated by musicians and audiences alike, was held between September 23rd and 29th in the Romanian capital city. The event, initiated and produced by Radio Romania is proof of the fact that professionalism and hard work always bear fruit, even at times of crisis. The festival’s artistic director, German pianist and conductor Christian Zacharias, believes that the festival was a real success.
“The fact that every evening music lovers came in big number to see great orchestras and soloists at work,” Zacharias argues, “is a great personal satisfaction”. As many as 7 symphonic music concerts and 5 chamber music concerts, performed by renowned radio orchestras and ensembles, such as the RAI Torino Symphonic Orchestra, Radio France Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra of Munich, the Radio Romania Orchestra, the Romanian Chamber Orchestra and Choir, the quartets Rivinius, Ad Libitum and Voces took to the stage throughout one week.
All these famous orchestras performed under the baton of equally famous conductors: Cristian Zacharias, Jurah Valchuha of Slovakia, Paul Meyer of Greece, Jukka Pekka Saraste of Finland as well as Romanians Ion Marin and Horia Andreescu. Among the soloists invited to this first edition of the festival are renowned violinists such as Russian Maxim Vengerov, German Viviane Hagner, Romanian Alexandru Tomescu as well as pianist Luiza Borac, who, in 2007, was rewarded with a BBC prize. A special guest of the RadiRo festival was Isabella van Keulen, an outstanding violin and viola player, currently artistic director of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.
One of RadiRo’s many personalities was pianist, professor and essayist Dan Grigore, who has introduced generations of students to the wonderful world of classical music. The concerts and recitals were broadcast live on Radio Romania Culture and Radio Romania Music channels. Also, as a member of the European Radio Union, the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation had the opportunity to broadcast the previously recorded concerts worldwide, so that large audiences could enjoy this unique event.
