More Changes in Romanian Education |
(2012-09-21) |
Last updated: 2012-09-21 13:48 EET |
The new school year started Monday in Romania with a few changes, the most important being the introduction of the so-called ‘grade zero’, where 130,000 pupils registered, and which was classified as part of primary education. Education Minister Ecaterina Andronescu said that the authorities faced a lot of difficulties in setting up classrooms, and said that after the first semester, an evaluation will be run to establish if grade zero should be returned to kindergarten.
Prime Minister Victor Ponta said that, in his opinion, it is necessary and useful for this preparatory class to be part of kindergarten, not school, starting next year. The possible transfer of the preparatory class to kindergarten, along with introducing the vocational high school graduation exam, the vocational baccalaureate, are the reasons why the Liberal Democrats want to introduce a simple motion for education, the first for the Ponta government. In the opinion of the Liberal Democrats, the two measures would destabilize the education system. Here is Liberal Democrat MP Raluca Turcan:
Raluca Turcan: “Prime Minister Victor Ponta is once again thinking to transfer this preparatory class to kindergarten. This decision means that on the one side you throw away all the investments that have been made, and on the other ignore the chaos that occurs when registering kids for kindergarten, you leave out in the cold the fourth grade teachers who finish the year, because they would not have a first grade to start teaching in. Minister Andronescu wants to introduce a vocational baccalaureate, which is a kind of pre-approved baccalaureate”.
The Romanian Senate has this week passed a bill allowing high school students to choose between a professional and a vocational baccalaureate in the 2012- 2013 school year, provided it is endorsed by President Traian Basescu. Passing the latter would allow one access to the labor market, but not university registration. The Education Minister Ecaterina Andronescu proposed the introduction of the so-called vocation baccalaureate after the exam yielded abysmal results in the last two years.
