PSD, BETWEEN REFORM AND MOBILISATION 05/02/2010 |

The Social Democrats are still reeling after an unexpected failure in the presidential election last December, won by Traian Basescu in spite of the natural decrease of his popularity during his first term in office and the political and media coalition which formed against him. Some PSD members blame this failure on the errors made by his challenger, Mircea Geoana, the incumbent president of the party.
In less than one year, the Social Democrats have lost all major political battles, as well as its supremacy in the political arena, and was unable to return to power. This is precisely what drives Geoana's opponents in the party. Cornered by his old enemies and criticised by those who were disappointed by his electoral performance, Mircea Geoana has accepted some responsibility, but has said that he will not give up. The PSD leader pleaded for fair play in the competition. Mircea Geoana:
“I call on all of you to make sure that these two weeks of party campaign unfold in a democratic, transparent, polite and cooperative manner. This great party has lost an important battle, yet our chances of quickly returning to power, capitalising on a difficult year and making sure that we’re the chief beneficiaries of this situation only depends on our will.”
Seen as quite likely to replace Mircea Geoana after February the 20th, the former prime minister and Social Democrat leader Adrian Nastase, spoke about change:
“Yes, I will run for the presidency of the Social Democratic Party. I'll be glad to take part in a battle of wits, it's the beauty pageants that I'm not interested in. To my mind, changing direction is important.”
The message in which former foreign minister Cristian Diaconescu announced his candidacy focused on the risk of the party splintering:
“Be careful! We risk falling into a major trap, because the Social Democratic Party must be important and interesting after the congress as well! If the only thing that we can offer is perpetual strife and a rush to form alliances, we risk erecting barbed wire fences between us, which might affect our performance after February the 20th.”
Also running for the PSD leadership is the former transportation minister Miron Mitrea, who has been pushed away from key party positions:
“I have good reasons to want to see the Social Democratic Party back in power. But I don't believe this can be achieved by smoothly waltzing into the government. We need energy, and not half-measures; we need to prove our energy in the political battle.”
