Bucharest will host to a unique event, the first edition of the RadiRo International Orchestra Festival, taking place between September 23 and 29. Romanian and foreign music lovers came in troves to this event, where they expect top notch music performance, as the orchestras performing them are the orchestras of public radios throughout the word, with soloists to match.
The organizers would like this first edition to extend, and to be in counter-step with the twice yearly George Enescu International Festival and Competition. RadiRo’s foremost personality will be its artistic director, pianist and famous conductors Christian Zacharias. He said he believed it is wonderful to bring together radio orchestras as a theme, especially since Radio Romania has two orchestras, and cultural exchanges in Europe are fruitful.
The possibilities of broadcasting are innumerable, Zacharias said. He believes that this festival may become a symbol of European unity, since it provides an opportunity for all these ensembles to show their mettle alongside one another. He added that this is a network that may make a wonderful beginning for a festival, especially given the fact that the Munich radio orchestra ranks among the top 3 or 4 orchestras in the world.
The festival opens on Sunday with the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, accompanied by the Radio Academic Choir. Many famous radio orchestras will be performing, such as the Italian radio orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, which last year celebrated its 80th year of existence, as well as the French radio orchestra. The latter, which was created in the ‘30s, will perform on Wednesday with violinist Jian Wang. Alexandru Tomescu will also be present, as one of the most important soloists of the Romanian school. He has over 20 international awards and has played hundreds of concerts worldwide, with recordings to match to his name.
