Prime Minister Victor Ponta’s Visit to Brussels |
(2012-09-18) |
Last updated: 2012-09-19 12:35 EET |
Three days after Traian Basescu had met in Brussels with European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso, on Monday it was Prime Minister Victor Ponta’s turn to meet up with the European official. The message Barroso conveyed to the two dignitaries was the same. Barroso called for responsibility and moderation among all political factions, urging them to concentrate their efforts on ensuring the political and institutional stability of the country, a stability which was severely shaken by an all-out political war throughout the campaign in the run-up to the referendum to impeach president Traian Basescu.
This war has raised doubts among Brussels officials with respect to the solidity of the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and the observance of the Constitution in the country. All doubts referring to those topics must be dispelled by Romanian politicians, Prime Minister Ponta told president Barroso.
The EU official retorted that Romania must go ahead with the reform of the judiciary as stipulated in the Commission’s justice report made public in July while a new report assessing progress in that direction is to be released by the end of the year. The new report, Barroso argues, is due to ascertain whether the Commission’s doubts were justified or control and democratic balance have been restored in Romania.
The Commission’s recommendation is that key nominations for the positions of Prosecutor General and Chief Prosecutor of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate should be made in a fair and transparent manner, while the government should avoid appointing ministers with clear integrity rulings against them. Prime Minister Ponta denied accusations implying that Romanian politicians are referring the political crisis to Brussels, hinting at president Traian Basescu’s choice to refer his impeachment to the European Commission.
Victor Ponta underscored that he could not ignore the 8.5 million votes expressed in the referendum, of which nearly 90% were in favour of impeaching the president. Prime Minister Ponta gave assurances that Romania will not step away from the European Union, while any domestic political conflicts will not spark off disputes with the European Commission or any other community institutions.
At economic level, the European Commission president called on the Romanian Government to continue structural reforms, particularly the reorganization of state-owned companies and the healthcare reform. rate remained very low, which might lead to Romania’s losing significant amounts of funding. Barroso also urged the government to take immediate measures to improve the administrative capacity and public procurement regulations.
