Romanian diplomacy celebrates 150 years

Bucharest hosted the Annual Meeting of the Romanian Diplomacy. Attending the meeting, president Traian Băsescu said Romania must keep its eurozone accession in 2015 as a goal and pleaded for greater European integration and a stronger role within NATO. The Romanian foreign minister, Titus Corlăţean, emphasised, in an interview to RADIO ROMÂNIA, the priorities of the government:

Titus Corlatean: „As a rule, foreign priorities remain the same, they do not change from one day to the next. Therefore, Romania’s interests, deriving from its full membership of the North-Atlantic Alliance, from the Strategic Partnership with the USA, with all its positive political, strategic and economic consequences, our EU membership and our interests in terms of the role, profile, importance and involvement in the EU decision-making process, all these have been reconfirmed as strategic lines of action for Romania”.
Another important target for Romania in the near future is Schengen accession.

Titus Corlăţean: "Schengen remains an important objective for our country, and since Romania has met the Schengen technical accession criteria, the accession requirements, we will obviously carry on our political and diplomatic efforts for non-discriminatory treatment.”
On the other hand, according to the foreign minister, Romania needs to preserve and even improve its access to European funding in areas such as infrastructure and agriculture.

The activity of the Romanian Parliament, delayed by disputes between Power and Opposition

A new parliamentary session has started in Romania, the last one in the current legislative term before the parliamentary elections scheduled for early December. Some of the priorities of the ruling majority, made up of the Social Democrats, the Liberals and the Conservatives, are the state budget law for 2013, the criminal procedure code, the healthcare law, the problems in the education system and the economy. Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats in opposition focus on launching talks on depoliticising certain public institutions. The Liberal Democratic Party said it would not table a no-confidence motion if Power “did its job” and if the government put an end to the political war. The start of the new parliamentary session was delayed by the disputes between Power and Opposition over the new membership of the standing bureaus of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies.

The employees of Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea carry on protests

The employees of the Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea Chemical plant protested against the delays in the government’s decision with respect to the company, but they are also disgruntled with not having received their salaries for two months. Constantin Roibu, the manager of Oltchim for the past 21 years, resigned during the protests and called on the employees to give up their protests, because all problems, he said, would be solved. Prime minister Victor Ponta promised that the chemical works would be privatised. In fact, the government has discussed the forthcoming privatisation of several other state-owned companies, and the need to bring private management to the national corporations, in view of making them profitable. The companies targeted by these plans include the Romanian Railway Corporation’s Freight Division, Metrorex, TAROM, and the National Motorway and Road Company.

Former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase was acquitted in one of the several cases he’s been involved in

Former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase was acquitted in the so-called ‘Tamara Aunt’ case, in which he had been accused of bribe giving. The decision of the High Court of Cassation and Justice is final and maintains the December 2011ruling of a lower court. That ruling had been contested by the prosecutors of the Anti-Corruption Directorate, who had called for a sentence of five years’ imprisonment for Adrian Nastase. Currently, the former Prime Minister is carrying out a two-year sentence for another charge, related to the funding of his 2004 presidential campaign. Nastase has also been sentenced to 3 years in prison for blackmail, with conditional suspension of execution, although the sentence is not final.

Poor results have been registered again in the autumn session of the baccalaureate.

After less than half of the students passed the first session of the Romanian baccalaureate, only one quarter of those who took the exam this autumn managed to pass it. To help young high-school graduates, Education Minister Ecaterina Andronescu has announced a differentiated baccalaureate examination for 2013. So, those who want to get straight to the labour market will have the opportunity to opt for the vocational baccalaureate. Education Minister Ecaterina Andronescu:

Ecaterina Andronescu: “Somebody who opts for the vocational baccalaureate can come back after a session or two, or whenever they think it’s necessary to move on to the higher education system. They can come back and take the written examinations that make the difference between the national baccalaureate and the vocational one".

A serious road accident was reported in France, involving a Romanian coach

Last Sunday, in southern France, a coach bearing Romanian license registration with 42 Romanian passengers on board was involved in a serious road accident. One person died and almost all the others were wounded when the coach flipped over on a highway near Marseilles. Romania’s General Consulate in Marseilles and the French authorities have taken the necessary steps to bring the Romanians back home. On Sunday, the Romanian Foreign Ministry activated its Alert Unit with the Consular Crisis Center to help the families of those involved in the accident. The ministry set up two emergency phone lines for the victims’ families.
