ROMANIA SNOWED IN 20/01/2010
(2010-01-20)

trafic_iarnaAgain tens of national and county roads have been closed down or blocked, cars have been abandoned on the roads, many villages and communes are isolated while others have been left without electricity; a number of flights has been delayed or suspended and several ports on the Black Sea have been closed. Trains have reported delays of tens of minutes if they were not cancelled altogether, and passengers complained about the cold temperatures inside the carriages.

As always local authorities have been taken by surprise. Mayors have convened the winter emergency teams and have started sanctioning the citizens who do not remove the snow in front of their houses or who will go to work by car. The general mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu is discontent with the way the companies in charge of removing the snow from the streets of the capital have complied with their duty and consequently decided to fine them, threatening to cancel their contracts. He asked them to remove the snow from the main streets and boulevards of the capital in order to avoid traffic jams and ensure that public transportation means run normally.

However many Bucharest inhabitants have learnt their lesson. They left their cars home, used the subway, buses and trams to go to work and removed the snow in front of their houses, residential buildings or companies.

Snow has brought trouble to some and advantages to others such as owners of mountain guest houses and winter sports equipment rentals and ski instructors. All hope that the number of tourists will grow.

However the news from meteorologists is bad. After snow storms there comes the frost; temperatures announced for this weekend will range from minus 25 degrees C in central Romania to minus 15 degrees C in the south and east.
