RADR 2012 Romania’s diplomats abroad have got together in Bucharest these days to attend the annual meeting of the Romanian Diplomacy. The meeting has acquired a special significance this year, when the Romanian Foreign Ministry celebrates 150 years of existence. Traditionally, the annual meeting of the Romanian diplomats is an opportunity for the relevant authorities to highlight the priorities of the Romanian diplomacy.

Attending the meeting, Prime Minister Victor Ponta has underscored the main achievements of the Romanian diplomacy along the years, giving assurances that Romania’s membership of the EU and NATO will further be the main landmark of the Romanian diplomacy, irrespective of any domestic political changes. He has also urged the Romanian ambassadors to promote more actively the country’s economic interests abroad.

In turn, Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean has said that one of the priorities of the Romanian foreign policy continues to be the consolidation of the special partnership with the Republic of Moldova, a former Soviet state with a predominantly Romanian-speaking population. He has reiterated Bucharest’s unconditional support for Moldova, in its effort to get closer to the EU. Ways to develop joint projects, laying special emphasis on energy and transportation, and a solution to the Transdniester conflict will further hold pride of place in the relationship between the two neighboring states.

The Romanian Foreign Minister has also said that one of the top priorities of his agenda are Romania’s relations with neighboring Ukraine and with Russia. Although in recent times the relationship between Bucharest and Kiev has been tense, against the backdrop of differences over the delimitation of the Black Sea continental shelf and the situation of ethnic Romanians in Ukraine, Bucharest hopes to foster warmer relations with Kiev.

As regards Russia, Titus Corlatean has expressed hope that bilateral relations will be boosted, based on what he has called “a positive and constructive agenda”. The meeting also focuses on the European strategic priorities, security, the relations with countries in such regions as Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East and granting assistance to the Romanians living abroad. The guests of honor of this year’s meeting, which will come to a close on Thursday, are the OSCE Secretary General, Lamberto Zannier, Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze and Moldovan justice minister Oleg Efrim.

In their turn, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton as well as the French and German foreign ministers, Laurent Fabius and Guido Westerwelle, respectively, have also conveyed messages on the occasion of the meeting.
