Poor Results in the Second Baccalaureate Session

rezultate bacalaureat The pass rate in this year’s second session of the Romanian Baccalaureate stands just over 24% before the exam appeal, as compared to 17% last year. Education Minister Ecaterina Andronescu says this summer’s pre-exam training accounts for this improvement. Andronescu however underscored high school students’ substandard preparation for the exam as compared to the first session.

The Head of the National Federation of Parents’ Associations Mihaela Guna believes the low pass rate is by no means surprising, given that the tests had the same rate of difficulty as in the first session. :

Mihaela Guna: “The rate of admission for this session was to be expected, because we’re talking about students who failed to pass the previous Baccalaureate exams. They couldn’t have assimilated four year’s worth of data and knowledge in just two months. It would have been absurd for the difficulty rate to be lowered only to have a higher success rate. It wouldn’t have been fair for the others”.

Nearly one hundred thousand students enlisted in this autumn’s Baccalaureate session, although less than 85,000 actually turned up for the exam. The Romanian Education Minister has highlighted that an ever-dropping success rate in addition to ever-growing student absenteeism point to mandatory changes in this field. The Ministry plans to organize mock examinations, review curricula, monitor students and hold a special session devoted to students seeking jobs that don’t require higher education.

Ecaterina Andronescu: “Anyone who opts for the professional Baccalaureate may choose to take the exam in a year or two, whenever he feels he needs to continue his studies. Those students will have to take written exams that differentiate the national Baccalaureate from the professional one”.
Minister Andronescu also said the Romanian education system is in peril, since students no longer take an interest in schooling.

Ecaterina Andronescu: “I want to tell all twelve-graders to take the exam seriously, while their parents must stay close to their children and support their efforts in passing this exam. Each student must take responsibility towards his future career and life”.

The final results of the second session of the Romanian Baccalaureate are due to be made public on September 5.
