Basescu in camapania pentru referendum On Monday, 52 days after Romanian president Traian Basescu was suspended, Parliament took note of the decision rendering invalid the referendum to impeach him. As FP reports, one of the nine judges of the Constitutional Court announced in front of Parliament, “the end of Crin Antonescu’s term as interim president and the restoration of the constitutional prerogatives to Traian Basescu”.

The report was taken over by such periodicals as Le Figaro and Le Parisien, and the media channel Euronews. The center-right-wing president, suspended by Parliament on July 6th, will have to work together with the center-left-wing parliamentary majority, led by Victor Ponta and Crin Antonescu, France Press also says.

International press agencies report that the Constitutional Court’s ruling ends a period of political strife that has also affected the economy. Reuters says: “The country's ruling leftist alliance, led by Prime Minister Victor Ponta, had fought a long and often bitter campaign to oust its main political opponent, rightist President Traian Basescu, provoking condemnation from Brussels and Washington, as to the Government’s observance of the rule of law and the judiciary.”

Romania’s Constitutional Court ruled that the referendum to impeach Basescu was invalid, as the turnout was less than 50 percent plus 1 of all voters as required, even if 88 percent of votes were against Basescu, Reuters adds. The Romanian press gives wide coverage to the topic that has made headlines for nearly two months now.

“The Social Liberal Union against the Western World” Jurnalul National headlines. The article reads: “This is the image that has been created. A false image, fervently championed by several Liberal Democrat leaders, as well as Traian Basescu, his advisors, diplomats who support him and several Foreign Intelligence officers. This lie was nicely wrapped and served on a plate to western leaders. They were deceived, and some of them willingly. They reacted badly and unjustly, stirring counter reactions. It’s a sort of vicious circle.”

Evenimentul Zilei, on the other hand, says that “Social Liberal MPs weren’t the most excited to hear the announcement that Basescu can return to office”. The daily paper notes that the minimum attendance in Parliament for this announcement was hardly obtained, with Social Liberals being reluctant to take part.

Romania Libera believes the attitude of Basescu’s opponents is “a show put on for the 7.4 billion people” who voted in favor of impeaching Basescu. Ziua Veche writes that the Social Liberal Union has been acting chaotically. Its two leaders, Crin Antonescu and Victor Ponta, are currently abroad, and the statements of other high-ranking Social-Liberal members are outlining an inevitable political fracture.
