THE NEW YEAR'S EVE IN ROMANIA 31/12/2009 |

A survey by the European Commission shows that two thirds of Romanians preferred to stay at home during the 2009 holidays while more than half of those who chose a tourist destination preferred domestic trips and cheap accommodation within reach by personal cars. Triggered by the present economic meltdown, such a low-cost attitude proved to be a good omen for guest-house owners, who offered good accommodation facilities at affordable prices.
Apart from saving money, this shift towards domestic tourism indicates a change in the Romanians’ curiosity, who, after 1989, set out to explore the Western countries in hordes, as if in a bid to cure themselves from the frustration accumulated back in the communist times. If in 2008 people booked tickets and accommodation for the New Year’s Eve holidays in advance, in 2009 they were more selective, going for ‘last minute’ bookings and discounts up to 35%.
A quite visible phenomenon for the end of the year celebrations is that tourists come to the hotels equipped with cookers to make their own meal while others prefer to eat in cafeterias. As a result, some New Year packages, which used to include complete services, have eliminated the day meals and include only the New Year’s Eve party, at an average price of 100 euros. Also because of the crisis, Romanians tend to be less sensitive to the quality of services. Only 4.3% of the tourists have criticised the services on offer, while the rest accepted compromises in exchange for a discount.
But there are Romanians who afford to spend the New Year’s Eve in an exotic tourist destination. According to the National Association of Travel Agencies, 400 of these people have opted for various cruises, while 1000 others for exotic islands. However to all the Romanians, living in the country or outside its borders, the greeting “A Happy New Year”, ‘La Multi Ani’ in Romanian, has the same significance.
