The authorities have lost their fight against snow - headlines the daily newspaper COTIDIANUL adding that the first snow fall in Romania has brought havoc on roads, highways, railways and airports. The same daily writes that the snow removal equipment brought on the streets, the anti-frost and anti-skidding substances used have not managed to release the country from the white blockage.
Inferno on roads covered in snow – the daily paper ROMANIA LIEBRA headlines, saying that it was drivers who were most affected. According to the National Roads Authority, the snow on the highway linking the capital Bucharest to the Black Sea Coast was not removed because workers could have died because of the snow storm.
The daily ROMANIA LIBERA also writes about an unprecedented and unimaginable situation reported on European Road E 85 where hundreds of cars were left snowed in for tens of hours. The same daily notes that several people, some of whom with medical problems, spent their night in the cold, without food and water, because the authorities did not care to intervene to remove the snow. Blocked between the snow and the authorities’ lack of respect - the daily newspaper EVENIMENTUL ZILEI reads bitterly.
Tens of people waited for long hours in the open plain for a rail problem to be fixed and then they were abandoned in a station by the Railway Authority employees who eventually forgot to inform them that their train was ready to leave.
On the other hand, the mega-contracts worth tens of millions of euros concluded by the authorities with various companies supposed to manage national roads and highways proved totally useless in the fight with the first snow. Traffic jams, road blockages, roads closed for traffic were all blamed on two directors who were dismissed and on the drivers who left home in their cars ignoring the bad weather forecasts.
The daily newspaper ZIUA writes ironically that you don't need an Al Qaeda attack for the infrastructure in Romania to collapse because, invariably, every year, all local and central authorities surrender to the first snow fall. The disaster has two causes, the daily concludes: on the one hand the incompetence, corruption and indifference of the people in charge, and on the other hand, the very old infrastructure that has become a danger in itself.
