ROMANIA UNDER SNOW 16/12/2009

The snow disturbed road and railway traffic in many parts of the country. Many cars collided or skidded on the icy roads, trains reported big delays and several villages and towns were left without electricity. Meteorologists issued a yellow code alert for the greatest part of the country, where heavy snow falls and strong winds are expected. Because of the snow, blizzard and icy snow, cars remained blocked for more than 12 hours on national and county roads.

Traffic was also disturbed on Romania's two highways, both located in the south of the country. On some roads across Romania even snow ploughs and the police vehicles remained snowed in. At least four emergency calls per minute were made by the people blocked in the snow on various national and county roads, intervention being prevented by the weather conditions. Local authorities have again been taken by surprise by the first snow, although they gave assurances that everything was under control- the daily EVENIMENTUL ZILEI writes ironically. The consequence: a higher number of car accidents was reported and the police fined several snow removal companies.

The capital city paralysed by icy snow -headlines the daily newspaper JURNALUL NATIONAL, adding that a snow fall in a quantity that is perfectly normal for this time of the year disturbed traffic in Bucharest, even though the authorities were well aware of the weather forecast. The daily paper GANDUL writes that the police in Bucharest found a scapegoat for the nightmare traffic in the capital: the drivers who don't have snow tyres.

Two snowed-in Romanias - one happy and one sad - writes the daily ADEVARUL, saying that children's joy exceeds the anger of drivers. On the other hand, mountain rescue teams have warned that most mountain routes in the Bucegi Massif are closed, with the snow layer exceeding 50 cm. Although it snowed a lot, the ski slopes in the Prahova Valley resorts are not yet operational.
