EurobarometruThat is actually what the European Commission’s latest Eurobarometer says, pointing out that the economic situation, along with the price rise and unemployment are the main fears of Romanians. 88% of Romanian respondents to a survey conducted in the 27 EU member states believe that that the economic situation is bad. Three quarters of them believe that in 12 months, the situation will be similar or even worse.

Four out of ten respondents incriminate the price rise and 36% of them estimate unemployment as the biggest threat. At EU level, 51% of respondents said unemployment was the biggest threat, followed by the economic situation, inflation and organized crime. More than 54% of Europeans say that the economic crisis has not reached its climax yet.

Still, they are a little bit more optimistic than the Eurobarometer survey performed this spring shows. As to domestic economies, optimism is more moderate, but still greater. 28% of respondents believe that the situation is going to improve, while 37% say that no change will occur.

Coming back to Romania, other sensitive points indicated by respondents are crime, which 23% of them believe it is the main problem, along with health-care, the pension system, the tax regime, education or housing. None of the respondents has indicated questions related to defense and external affairs as important issues which Romania might be confronted with.
