Effects of the Drought

Crops are taking a beating in Romania, in the worst drought of the last 50 years, which means the situation might be extremely serious this autumn. Most crops in the eastern, southern and southeastern parts of Romania are completely destroyed, since it hasn't rained here for more than two months. But the lack of rain has affected the entire country.

Corn and sunflower crops have been almost entirely damaged in eight counties across Romania, among which Iasi, Salaj, Dolj and Covasna. In the county of Salaj for instance, corn, potato, and sunflower crops have been seriously affected, while 30% of them are completely damaged. Buzau is another county hit by drought, where farmers have lost most of their corn, wheat and sunflower crops and have even given up threshing, as this operation would have cost them more than what they could earn by selling the crops.

Farmers warn the situation might get worse if it doesn’t rain soon. In Braila, the Farmers' Association, made up of hundreds of land-owners with over 150,000 hectares of land, have called on the Agriculture Ministry to declare a state of emergency. Farmers in Vrancea County required the same.

Romanian authorities have engaged in talks with the European Commission to obtain financing to upgrade the irrigation system on an area of 800,000 hectares of farmland, starting January 1st, 2014. The Romanian Government has also announced a set of measures aimed at combating the effects of drought and supporting farmers, as well as the setting up of a lending fund with preferential interest rates for farmers.

The heat wave has also affected crops in numerous countries in Europe, Russia included, as well as in China and the US. Although the global market is not facing a crisis similar to that of 2007-2008, when the high price of food triggered violent protests in several underdeveloped countries, an increase in the grain prices is a reason for concern.

The price of corn in the US, where the worst drought since 1956, raises fears regarding food supply problems, has spiked over 55% in the past few weeks. Romanian experts are also concerned as they compare this year's drought in Romania with the 1946 drought, which led to rampant famine.
