Things continue to be unsettled in Romanian politics. At the moment, the Democratic Party, which has recently joined the opposition due to rifts with the liberals headed by Prime-Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, has filed a motion of censure, entitled ‘The Tariceanu government must leave’. The authors of this motion criticize the cabinet for its lack of performance, which they described as being the poorest since 1989. The democrats’ initiative has not been supported in Parliament by the parliamentary groups of the Social Democratic Party, the National Liberal Party, the Conservative Party, the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania and the Greater Romania Party, who left the chamber. The prime-minister stated that the motion is the result of a conflict that has lasted for over 5 months, with president Traian Basescu being responsible. The motion of censure will be debated in a joint session of the two chambers of the Romanian parliament on Monday.
The representatives of 56 countries, members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, OSCE, have gathered in Bucharest for two days to discuss fighting discrimination. The participants tackled issues such as racism and xenophobia, anti-Semitism and intolerance, but also the freedom of religion and educational programs. Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Cioroianu has stated that Romania’s decision to host this conference is proof of government’s commitment to OSCE norms and values. President Traian Basescu underlined the fact that Romanians boast a long tradition of common sense and respect for diversity.
Romania has also been the host of the summit of the South-East European countries, whose main topic was ‘Cultural diversity-a bridge between heritage and the culture of the future’. The joint declaration signed at the end of the meeting reads that the cultural inheritance of the countries in south-east Europe plays a major role in boosting regional and global cooperation. The participants expressed their determination to encourage joint activities and projects, to create new opportunities for cultural exchanges and to boost inter-state cooperation in fighting the illegal trafficking of cultural assets. Moreover, they intend to promote more effective strategies of rapprochement between cultures and countries.
Bucharest is currently hosting the 2nd Bookfest Book Fair, organized for the first time in 2006, at the initiative of the Romanian Publishers’ Association. Besides benefiting from discounts on books of up to 50%, visitors can attend conferences, debates and book launches. Another cultural event underway in Romania is the International ‘Days and nights of literature’ Festival, hosted by the Romanian Black Sea resorts of Mangalia and Neptun. This is the sixth edition of the festival, which this year brings together over 60 Romanian and foreign writers, personalities and officials from key cultural institutions in Romania and abroad.
Sibiu, the 2007 European Capital of Culture, and Cluj, both in central Romania, are hosting this year’s Transylvania International Film Festival. The festival was opened by the film that brought Romania its first Palme d’Or for a feature film, Cristian Mungiu’s “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days”. For his outstanding achievement at Cannes, the director was awarded the National Order ‘The Star of Romania’ in rank of knight. The late director Cristian Nemescu, whose unfinished film ‘California Dreamin’ got the Un Certain Regard award in Cannes, and was post-humously awarded the National Merit Award in rank of knight.
In the world of sports, on Wednesday, Romania beat Slovenia 2-nil, thus consolidating its position in group G of the 2008 European Football Championship preliminaries. After seven matches, Romania is still undefeated, and now ranks first in the group, with 17 points, followed by Bulgaria with 15. Third comes the Netherlands with 14 points.
