CONTESTED ELECTIONS AND POSSIBLE GOVERNMENT SCENARIOS 09/12/2009 |

This win grants Traian Basescu his second term as president, but is questioned by his opponents, who accused him of having forged the elections, and have filed complaints with the Constitutional Court. The outcome of the elections was, without a doubt, a personal victory for Traian Basescu. However, it does not absolve him from his obligation to deal with the domestic political crisis.
Basically, Traian Basescu and his supporting Liberal Democratic Party will have to shake hand with their former adversaries, in order to provide Romania with a stable government that relies on a substantial majority. This will be tough to achieve, given past relations between the parties in question, as neither the National Liberal Party nor the Social Democratic Party were able to hold an alliance with the Liberal Democrats. The first attempts to draw the National Liberal Party into a right wing alliance were made during the election campaigns.
Crin Antonescu, leader of this party, has stood staunchly against such a partnership. Some of his fellow party members, however, show signs that it would not be impossible. Many Liberals, including former Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, are tempted by the well-paid jobs that accession to power would provide. They say that joining the democratic liberals in government for the sake of national interest is possible, however, under certain conditions. The daily Romania Libera asks “What will Traian Basescu give up in exchange for a partnership?” Evenimentul Zilei headlines “Calin Popescu Tariceanu is turning the screws on Crin”, while Jurnalul National quotes what the liberal leader asked of Basescu – “all or nothing; the position of Prime Minister”. “Crin in the opposition, or Calin in government?” asks the daily Gandul, under the signature of Cristian Tudor Popescu, noting that the fair and moral thing for the National Liberal Party to do would be to stay in opposition.
Cotidianul sees the undecided liberals as being somewhere “between government, the opposition or just stalling”, while Ziua lists the effects of the economic and political crisis that will affect Romania in 2010. Editor Sorin Rosca-Stanescu wrote that “Considering that Basescu won another term, he will either instate a minority liberal democratic government, will build a fragile majority with the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians, other minorities and independent politicians, or will resort to snap elections. Either way, Romania will sink deeper into the crisis“.
