The 2012 Baccalaureate Exam in Romania
(2012-07-09)

rezultate bacalaureat A victim of its own reforms, after the 1989 demise of communism, Romania’s education system has registered another failure. The poor Baccalaureate results obtained by Romanian students over the last years seem to pave the way for an unwanted and undignified tradition of an education system that claims European high standards.

Only 43% of high-school students passed the first Baccalaureate session this year, in a sad confirmation that last year’s poor scores were not a mere accident. The newly reinstated education minister Ecaterina Andronescu enlarges on the discontent triggered by the low pass rate.

Ecaterina Andronescu: “Measures should have been taken to boost school performance. I am thinking about students who have failed the exam, and their families, people we should not discourage. On the contrary we’d like to encourage those who flunked the exam to give up holiday plans and start learning hard for the second round this year and we’d like to assist them with training courses. However, these low scores cannot please anyone inside the system. They are way below the expectations of anyone in the education system.”

Among the causes leading to the disastrous situation, were the anti-fraud measures and the exam’s high difficulty. Under these circumstances, only 170 000 students attended the first Baccalaureate session, which until last year had been perceived as a mere formality. The education ministry had expected 100 000 more students to turn out.

In a reiteration of last year’s situation, the low pass rate is expected to exert significant pressure on universities, especially on private ones, which will see dropping application rates this year. At the same time, the situation tells of the lack of competition, interest and commitment of people at the helm of the education ministry for the past 23 years.

For this reason, many believe the education system should have been the only vestige of the communist regime to be preserved. Undergoing perpetual changes that have confused students, parents and teachers alike, the Romanian education system is far from being a standard at regional and at European level. The fact that no Romanian university ranks among the world’s first 500 is but a confirmation.
