POLITICAL AGREEMENT IN THE ELECTORAL BATTLE 26/11/2009 |
(2009-11-26) |
Last updated: 2009-11-30 16:30 EET |
The main objectives of the potential coalition government are lowering taxation, decentralising and depoliticising public administration, support for disadvantaged social categories, as well as transparency and effectiveness in spending public money. The agreement with the National Liberal Party is a big step towards ensuring political stability and should not be viewed as a compromise, claims Mircea Geoana:
“What we have signed today is not political bartering. It’s not the selling of votes, it’s gathering together the positive energies of this nation, after 5 years of tension and scandal. We have brought together the positive forces that will drive Romania in the right direction.”
The Liberal leader Crin Antonescu will try to channel most of the votes he got in the first round towards his new ally, hoping that from December 6th Romania will have a new president, capable of guaranteeing the balance of power and adopting the role of mediator in society. Through this agreement with the Social Democratic Party, the Liberal Party does not necessarily aim to become part of the government, says Crin Antonescu:
“For those who tend to see hidden things behind our statements and political actions, because that’s what they’ve been used to, I want to stress that the National Liberal Party has not done this to become part of the government. If that were our objective, we would’ve done this earlier, under better offers.”
On the other side of the barricade, the head of the pro-presidential Liberal Democratic Party, Emil Boc, has denounced what he calls a political transaction meant to guarantee future joint businesses, running counter to the national interest. Emil Boc:
“Romanians have understood that this political agreement is in fact a contract under which Romanians’ votes will be traded, and the only objective is the country’s assets that have not yet been privatised, be they energy resources or other assets. This is the real stake of this agreement, at the expense of the Romanian people”.
Politically isolated, the head of state Traian Basescu has told his opponents that the fight for presidency is not over yet.
“December 6th will not bring them happiness, and I will carry on defending Romanians from their greed, no matter how much that conflicts with their interests. I can assure you I will not let them reach their prey.”
