"Who will be Romania’s president for the next five years - Traian Basescu, backed by the Liberal Democratic Party, or Mircea Geoana, the head of the Social Democrats?” This question is currently the focus point of every major Romanian newspaper, and will be answered in two weeks’ time, when Romanians go to the ballots for the second round of the presidential elections.

The daily ZIARUL FINANCIAR wrote that “Even though everyone was waiting for a surprise, it didn’t come, and Basescu and Geoana will go head to head in the final round.”

Crin Antonescu, leader of the National Liberal Party, constantly ranking third in opinion polls, maintained this position after the first round of elections. The newspaper also wrote “Although the liberals have done a good job lately, they failed to take their candidate to the second round of elections”, and recalled that “In their statements after the estimated results were in, both Basescu and Geoana courted Antonescu”.

The attitude exhibited by the two remaining candidates is easily explained, given that the votes of liberal supporters, some 20 percent of the total in the first round, will have a lot of weight in deciding the next president in the second. Furthermore, the liberals will play a major part in forming the new executive, as for the past few weeks, the ruling force in Romania has been an interim Liberal Democratic government, and opposing factions can’t seem to reach an agreement on choosing a Prime Minister.

The daily JURNALUL NATIONAL noted the reactions of presidential candidates after the first round of elections. Basescu believes he is halfway through to the final victory, while Mircea Geoana says he brought joy to his party. Antonescu blames media tycoons and rigged opinion polls for his vote count, while Vadim Tudor, head of the Greater Romania Party, asked that the elections be cancelled on account of fraud.

According to EVENIMENTUL ZILEI, manipulation of the voters is a bigger issue than any possible fraud, the newspaper writing that “this dementia that the elections were rigged, kickstarted by the social-democrats, and boosted by television networks and civil society, is helping politicians, but is affecting the constitutional rights of many voters”. International publications also scrutinized elections in Romania.

France Presse said that “no matter who the winner will be, he will be swiftly called on to name a Prime Minister in order to end the political conundrum caused by hard line attitudes of both Basescu and the opposing majority in Parliament”. The German radio network Deutsche Welle believes that “should Basescu win the second round of elections, he will have the power to aid the formation of a government that will instate drastic fiscal reforms. On the other hand, should Geoana come our victorious, power will be handed back to the old members of the Social Democratic Party, a faction with deep roots in Romania’s former communist regime.

According to Euronews, on Sunday, Romanians voted on their next president in hope of ending the country’s ongoing political and financial crisis.”
