REACTIONS AFTER SUNDAY’S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 23/11/09 |
(2009-11-23) |
Last updated: 2009-11-24 16:11 EET |
Exit polls after Sunday’s first round of the presidential election confirm forecasts: fighting on in the second round of the presidential vote will be the incumbent president of Romania and the de facto leader of the governing Liberal Democratic Party, Traian Basescu, and the President of the Senate and of the Social Democratic Party, Mircea Geoana, each having reaped about one third of the votes cast.
They outran the other presidential candidates, of whom the only real challenger was the leader of the National Liberal Party, Crin Antonescu, who was voted by one fifth of the voters. Traian Basescu’s first conclusion was actually a first electoral message for the second round of voting. He congratulated those people who voted in the referendum on the reform of Parliament. And invoking an outright victory of the right, which also includes the Liberal Democratic Party, he reminded their former Liberal allies, virtual arbiters in the final, that 5 years ago he also ran on their behalf:
“This is already a victory obtained by Romanians against a political class that did not want to willingly comply with their requests. In the first round we got a score very close to that obtained in 2004 as part of an alliance”.
The almost 20% of the population who voted for Crin Antonescu were also courted by Social Democrat leader Mircea Geoana. In an enumeration unconvincingly copying Obama’s discourse, Mircea Geoana intimated that they are fishing votes from all walks of life:
”It’s only after December 6th that the real hard work begins. Let’s unite all, men and women, young and old, farmers and employees, Romanians from Romania and abroad, and supporters and voters of all those who ran in this presidential race and especially those who decided not to participate in this election, because they are disappointed or disgruntled.
Crin Antonescu, the Liberal candidate with the best electoral performance over the past 20 years, avoided asking his voters to side with one or the other of the presidential challengers running in the second round.
“Thank you, because we have shown everybody that we can. We can make it against the propaganda machines and we can make our will be heard”.
This is a statement that does nothing but increase the suspense over the outcome of the second round of the presidential election.
