Canalul Dunare - Marea Neagra On Danube Day this year, the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River held over 200 events in the Danube countries. On this occasion, one year from the launch of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, which brings together 8 member states and 6 neighbouring countries, EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn is on a tour of the region to raise political and public awareness about the importance of the strategy and to evaluate the progress made by the Danube countries.

Johannes Hahn will visit seven Danube countries, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria. In Romania, the EU official will be visiting the Iron Gates hydroelectric dam, the largest on the Danube, on the border with Serbia. He will also be visiting the Calafat-Vidin Bridge, the second biggest bridge over the Danube between Romania and Bulgaria, which should be ready by the end of the year.

By July 1st, the European commissioner will run an evaluation of the progress made by the countries involved in the Danube Strategy. Talking about this, Johannes Hahn said:

Johannes Hahn: “The Danube area is a microcosm that represents Europe as whole, with all its cultural diversity, its different peoples, with all the changes that history has brought, sometimes with ethnic conflicts, but living and working together are a beginning for solving any issue”.

The Danube Strategy combines regional, research, transportation and environmental policies, as well as security issues, tourism and economic growth, in order to make the region a better place to live and work. It is an instrument for the implementation of the 2020 European Strategy which facilitates economic growth and creates jobs in the macroregion. The strategy aims to intensify river traffic on the Danube, by improving navigation and connections, as well as promoting innovation by creating a Danube Innovation Fund and encouraging exchange of knowledge.

The countries taking part in the EU Danube Strategy are Germany, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Moldova and Ukraine. Romania has the largest surface of the Danube basin. Its national environmental strategies are aimed at developing the environmental infrastructure, reducing pollution and restoring damaged ecosystems, such as the lower Danube floodplain.
