Rugby lovers from all over the world will these days have their attention focused on the games played in Bucharest as part of the IRB Nations Cup, a rugby tournament held under the auspices of the International Rugby Board, the world’s highest rugby forum.
Italy and Argentine have come to Romania with their second squads, while from South-Africa we have received Emerging Springboks, a selection which is a sort of breeding ground for the South-African national rugby squad. Namibia and Georgia have sent to Bucharest their first representatives.
The Nations Cup opened with the game pitching Italy against Argentina on Tuesday, June the 5th. The first part of the game was balanced and the score was 14-all before the halfway. Towards the end of the second half of the game, the South-Africans managed to score two tries, winning the game 27-20.
Georgia and Namibia, two sides already qualified for the World Cup put up an excellent show in front of the several thousand rugby lovers gathered on the stadium near the Triumphant Arch in capital Bucharest. The Georgians’ excellent physical condition made up for the team’s poor technical abilities, allowing them to win the game 26-18.
The most awaited for game took place at night and opposed the Romanian rugby squad to South-African selection Emerging Springboks, the odds-on favourite. The guests managed to score their first try as early the second minute of the game. For several minutes after the South Africans had scored their first try the Romanian side mounted several waves of attack but failed to score. Emerging Springboks seized control of the game almost entirely allowing the Romanians to score their honor try towards the end of the match The final score, Emerging Springboks 61, Romania 7, speaks volumes about the difference in value between the two sides.
The next games are due on June the 10th, when Italy takes on Georgia and Romania plays Namibia. Emerging Springboks is due to meet the first selection of Argentina.
