As an emergency measure, Romania will import 500 thousand doses of swine flu vaccine for children. This decision was made by the Government in Bucharest, along with that to double the national vaccine production, from five million doses this year to five million more after January 1st. The Cantacuzino National Institute for Research and Development in Microbiology and Immunology will produce the vaccines needed by Romania faster than initially planned. Former Minister of Health Dr. Ion Bazac dismissed fears of the vaccine's possible side effects, saying that testing on adults had demonstrated its efficiency. He also said that testing on children had recently begun. Here is Ion Bazac.

“The Cantacuzino Institute will test its vaccine for children in Timisoara, so the first doses should be ready earlier than January. The vaccine produced by the Cantacuzino Institute is safe. Testing will be completed and the National Health Authority will have approved the vaccine by November the 26th. According to the information I have, the vaccine will be approved some time around the 17th of November”.

Interim Minister of Health, Adriean Videanu, assured the people that the situation is under control. He also said that Romania has received requests for assistance from neighbouring countries. Here is Adriean Videanu.

“At the moment, we have 370 thousand doses of Tamiflu, enough to treat almost 350 thousand people. We've started to dispatch them to county hospitals. The Ministry of Health decided to increase production. We have a very good, high-quality vaccine, much better than the one produced in France. We are one of the EU's eight vaccine producers, and benefit from support from Ukraine, Moldova and Bulgaria. We will furthermore try to secure the country's borders. At the moment, there's no need to close any border crossing point; however we do monitor all of them permanently”.

Aside from taking prevention measures, such as disinfecting and isolating affected patients, the authorities have had to close down educational institutions throughout the country. The Ministry of Health ruled that schools be shut down after three cases of infection have been detected in different classrooms. After that point, all classes are suspended for seven days. According to recent data published by the World Health Organization, the H1N1 virus has killed at least 5,700 people during the last seven months all over the world.
