“My mission is over” - read the headlines of many Romanian newspapers, quoting Prime Minister-designate Lucian Croitoru. On Wednesday, the Romanian Parliament reject him with 250 votes against, and only 189 in favor. “Croitoru – a fool's tenure” headlines the daily Cotidianul, while Adevarul uses more moderation, writing: “Croitoru's cabinet, put down by Parliament”. The same publication noted that “although having stood no chance”, his team snatched ten votes from opposition defectors of the Social-Democratic National Liberal Ethnic Hungarian coalition. The alliance controls 60 percent of all seats in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
Croitoru was chosen by president Traian Basescu to form a new government, and benefited only from the support of Basescu's affiliates – the Democratic Liberal Party. The daily Romania Libera wrote that “the end of Project Croitoru was expected”. However, this state of affairs takes Romania to the same state it was in three weeks ago, when the Democratic-Liberal cabinet led by Emil Boc was dismissed by censure motion. Romania Libera wrote that once again, “the Liberal-Democratic Party is claiming its right to appoint a prime minister, relying on presidential support”, while the majority will push Sibiu Mayor Klaus Johannis to the forefront.
Evenimentul Zilei dropped a bomb by saying that the dismissed, but acting Boc government is left without any competition, as “the law doesn't allow Johannis to become Prime Minister”. Following a press investigation in Sibiu, the newspaper Evenimentul claims that six years ago, during his first term as mayor, Johannis broke the law by being manager of a commercial company while he was holding his public position. According to legal experts, this would prevent him from holding any public position in the future. Gandul believes that Johannis is not a viable option.
The daily suggests that president Basescu might designate Liberal-Democratic Vice-President Vasile Blaga, the only candidate from Croitoru's team who was endorsed by parliament. Lost in the flurry of scenarios, Adevarul concludes that the real drama is not on the political scene, but rather on the economic and social one. The publication wrote that “were the economy stable, everything would be a political grab for power and nothing more. Plus, we could afford to change the government every month”.
