Transylvania seems to be one of Prince Charles’s favorite holiday destinations. The historical land in central Romania has won the heart of the heir to the British Crown, who comes here every spring to enjoy the simple things in life before returning his more hectic palace lifestyle.
The Prince enjoys outdoor walks through the forests and villages, and has said he would like to see the same ‘feeling of belonging, of identity’ he found in the people of Transylvania in Britons as well. The Daily Mail quoted him as saying: “this extraordinarily unique integrated relationship is so hugely important.
People are yearning for that sense of belonging and identity and meaning”. Prince Charles became so fond of Romania that a few years back, he bought several properties in Transylvania. Among them are three old buildings, over a century old, in isolated hamlets, far from the noise and pollution of the modern world.
The Prince has also expressed concern for the preservation of the cultural heritage of villages in this region. He became involved in a program to restore several village founded by Saxon colonists in the Middle Ages. Some of these are listed as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Through the Transylvania Authentica Foundation, an initiative to support local farmers in using traditional methods,
Prince Charles is an active supporter of Romania’s green agriculture. On his latest private visit to Romania, the Prince of Wales also met with President Traian Basescu, who thanked him for the constant attention he has paid our country, and his contribution in the making of ‘Wild Carpathia’, a documentary that has greatly helped tourism in our country.
The heir apparent to the British Crown came to Romania only a day after the celebrations of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee came to a close. At a reception held in Bucharest to mark this very same occasion, President Traian Basescu said that celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 years of reign is a remarkable example of dedication and commitment that all world leaders should observe.
In turn, at the celebrations in Bucharest, Prince Charles reminded his audience of the prosperous relations between Romania and the UK. He also expressed his appreciation for Romania’s traditions and cultural values, and noted their importance in Europe and the world today.
