AH1N1 ALERT 29/10/2009
(2009-10-29)
Last updated: 2009-10-30 13:22 EET
Over 440 people have been contaminated with the virus, some of whom are in a serious condition, which, in medical terms, means that the patients require oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation. A school has been shut down temporarily in Iasi, because of the large number of pupils who got contaminated with the AH1N1 virus.

Authorities are carrying out medical check ups in schools, in a move to try to detect any possible cases early. State Secretary with the Health Ministry, Adrian Streinu-Cercel, has urged all those who have flu symptoms and are more vulnerable to the new virus, to stay indoors until they heal completely. He has called on people to help prevent the virus from spreading, while reminding the common symptoms of the disease. Adrian Streinu-Cercel:

"If you get infected and you have symptoms like running nose, fever and a generally poor condition, you should stay at home because you risk developing severe forms of the disease.’’

Professor Streinu Cercel has recommended that, in case one member of the family gets sick, the entire family should limit contact with other people until the disease is diagnosed. ‘’Swine flu has invaded Romania,’’ the daily newspaper Adevarul headlines, reporting that epidemiologists urge Romanians to stay indoors if they catch a cold, because otherwise the swine flu might be fatal for 100 thousand people. The daily Gandul imagines a worst-case scenario: 6 million people get infected with the new flu virus out of whom 150 thousand might die.

A vaccination campaign against the swine flu virus will start in Romania on December 1st and pupils will be vaccinated at the beginning of January, the press reports. The alert generated by the AH1N1 virus is valid throughout the whole of the European Union where one out of three people risks getting infected over the next months. The virus will evolve and become more aggressive, say European health officials. Its spreading threatens people’s lives and affects the tourism and leisure industries, which are likely to slow down the pace of economic recovery.
