The Norwegian production “Oslo, August 31st” directed by Joachim Trier won the Transylvania Trophy at the 19th Transylvania International Film Festival, held in the city of Cluj between June 1st and 10th. The film presents the life of a drug addict who is confronting his own past.
“Everybody in our Family”, a film directed by the Romanian Radu Jude and the Serbian controversial feature film “Klip”, by Maja Milos, were also among the winners. The Hungarian actress Mari Torocsik, the French director Claude Lelouch, the American actress Geraldine Chaplin, daughter of the legendary Charlie Chaplin as well as the Romanian actor Ion Caramitru won special awards for Lifetime Achievement.
The award for Best Performance went to the Danish actor Kim Kold, for his role in “Teddy Bear”. In his turn, the British director Paddy Considine got the prize of the International Federation of Film Critics for his production “Trinozaur” released last year. Excellency Prizes were awarded to Romanian born directors Iosif Demian and Helmut Sturmer, who have been living abroad more than 20 years.
The Transylvania International Film Festival also hosted a special event: the anniversary of 40 years since the first screening of “The Stone Wedding”, directed by Mircea Veroiu and Dan Pita, considered one of the best Romanian films of all time. The film ranks 6th in the classification of The Top 10 Romanian Films of All Time, drawn up after the voting of 40 film critics in 2008.
One of the festival’s surprises was the world premiere of “Noseland”, a documentary about the world of classic music and some of its greatest voices, directed by the Russian Aleksey Igudesman and the German Sebastian Leitner. The Transylvania International Film Festival ended with the screening of a comedy, “Starbuck”, directed by Ken Scott, the greatest box office hit in Canada, last year.
