Voters must choose from among 96 competitors, representatives of parliamentary and non-parliamentary parties, political alliances, electoral alliances and organizations of the national minorities. Almost 45 official positions are to be filled, of which 41 for county council president, 1138 for county councilor, 3187 for mayor and 40,311 for local councilor. As many as 300 thousand candidates are running in the competition for the county councilor seat.
Minister-delegate for Administration, Victor Paul Dobre, has announced that 18,133 polling stations have been set up for the event. He gave assurances that everything has been prepared thoroughly for these local elections, which, for the first time after 1989, will include a single round of voting for the positions of mayor and county council president. A second round of voting will be organized only in case of run-off. The candidate who gets most votes during the first round of voting, wins the mayor seat.
The Administration Minister has specified that all Romanian citizens aged over 18 have the right to vote. EU citizens who have the domicile or residence in Romania enjoy the same right. Thus, 37,704 Italians, Germans and French are expected to cast their vote in the Romanian local elections. Before casting their ballots, voters have to present their ID cards, temporary ID cards, diplomatic or labor passport, or, in the case of military academy students, their military cards. They can only vote in the village, city, or administrative area they reside in.
The local election campaign lasted 30 days. According to the Romanian authorities, things went smoothly and unfolded within the legal background. However, there were about 2100 election incidents, of which some 900 had a criminal character. Political annalists see the Sunday’s elections as a serious test for the political parties in Romania, ahead of the legislative elections this autumn.
