The 11th Transylvania International Film Festival is expected to host a competition tighter than ever, with a number of surrealist, tragic, emotional and comedy films competing for the Grand Prize. The festival traditionally features mainly young directors, on their first or second feature film. 12 films will be competing this year, brought here from Iceland, Norway, the US, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Israel, Austria, Canada, Russia, Chile and, of course, Romania.

According to the selector, almost all of these works discuss characters dealing with crisis situations, in one way or another. Opening the festival are two special screenings – a restored color version of George Melies’s “A Trip to the Moon”, 110 years after its first public screening, and the premiere of Tudor Giurgiu’s “Of Men and Snails”. One of the surprises this year will be the world premieres of “Noseland”, a documentary by Aleksey Igudesman and Sebastian Leitner, paying tribute to classical music and foremost musicians of the genre.

The international Lifetime Achievement Awards will go to esteemed director Claude Lelouch and actress Geraldine Chaplin, notable figures of world cinema. The 100% Section is devoted this year to one of the directors who have left an indelible mark on the first century of cinematography: Stanley Kubrick. The Focus Section will include screenings of recent hits from Denmark, Australia and China, while the 3x3 Section will pay tribute to Claude Lelouch, Ole Christian Madsen and Hitoshi Matsumoto.

The Romanian Lifetime Achievement Award will go to actor, director and cultural manager Ion Caramitru. During the “Romanian Film Days”, the best Romanian films of 2012 will be screened. The Grand Prize – the Transylvania Trophy – and the Prize for Best Feature Film will be awarded by the Romanian Cultural Institute. The films will be screened in Cluj Napoca, a city in central Romania – in 6 cinemas, at the Students’ Cultural Center, the French Cultural Institute and two major town squares.

The Art Museum will host TIFFArt, a series of events, screenings and concerts. The Banffy Castle in Bontida remains one of the most spectacular venues of the Festival.
