Floods in Romania |
(2012-05-31) |
Last updated: 2012-06-05 13:54 EET |
The heavy rainfall of recent days has wrought havoc in over 125 localities in 18 central and eastern counties in Romania. The worst floods have been reported in the Eastern counties of Buzau and Vrancea, where a state of alert has been declared, and will remain in force until the problems caused by the heavy rain are solved.
The locals fear that landslides and land erosion will occur, given that most of the localities that were hit by heavy rain are situated in the hills and mountains. According to the General Inspectorate for Emergencies, some 800 households, as well as hundreds of hectares of farmland, have been flooded across the country. Several county roads and sections of railway have been damaged and a number of bridges and footbridges have been swept away by the torrents.
Over 600 employees of the Interior Ministry, together with hundreds of members of the emergency service volunteers, have tried to mitigate the effects of the heavy rainfall in flooded areas. Thousands of people in isolated villages are still waiting for aid from officials, who were often caught off guard. Prime Minister Victor Ponta has asked the relevant ministers to make a briefing on the situation triggered by the recent rainfalls.
Meteorologists have announced that it will keep raining in the coming days and flood warnings are still in place. In turn, hydrologists forecast that the run-off waters will bring river levels to above the emergency threshold. As if floods haven’t been causing enough trouble these days, Romania is now also facing the problem of pollution. An oil pipe has broken on the Oltet River in Olt County, Southern Romania.
The leakage has already extended over a two km area, and officials are trying to build an absorbing dam to contain the damage. Last week, another crude leakage was reported on the Cotmeana River, Arges County in the South. Experts failed to prevent the leakage from spreading, which gained ground because of the recent downpours.
