Bookfest 2011 A genuine cultural marathon, Bookfest has everything: from presentations of books and CDs, book readings, meetings with leading figures of the Romanian and international literary world, to debates, concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, and theatre shows for children. Over 150 exhibitors, including publishing, printing and distribution houses as well as partner companies participate in this seventh international book fair staged jointly by the Romanian Printers Association, the French Embassy and the French Cultural Institute.

The organizers have decided to observe the fair’s tradition, namely that every edition should have a country as the guest of honour. After Hungary in 2011, this year’s special guest is France. The fair is also be attended by a number of leading international writers, such as Michel Houellebecq, Silvie Germain, Academy Member Dominique Fernandez as well as the TV producer and host Bernard Pivot, who will host a writing test in French.

At the same time book lovers will have the chance of attending talks by leading figures from Romania, such as Neagu Djuvara, Gabriel Liiceanu, Lucian Boia and Mircea Cartarescu, who is one of the most translated Romanian writers abroad. The Association of Romanian Publishers will discuss the statute of the book publisher in Romania and Europe in an event which brings together representatives of printing houses from Romania, Poland and France.

At the same time, several publishing houses are expected to launch a campaign aimed at encouraging reading among the public. To this end, they offer significant discounts to the books on sale. Bookfest has also a lot to offer to film lovers, offering them the chance of attending free screenings of works by well-known French authors, such as Michel Houellebecq’s “The Elementary Particles”. Children have not been forgotten either, as the fair includes a special programme dedicated to them entitled The Little Book-warm Club”. As every year, the club stages workshops and reading contests, games, puppet shows as well as other attractive events.
