Romania was hit by winter early as an unusually early cold wave has swept the country, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures. Cold showers fell across Bucharest, and strong winds knocked out power lines, and left roads blocked by fallen trees. Snowfalls caused damage throughout Romania, with power cuts striking northern, southern and north-western areas of the country. Snow and fallen trees disrupted traffic, and one road was closed and will stay like that until spring. Up to 25 cm of snow settled in over several mountain areas. A homeless person died from hypothermia in eastern Romania, the first victim of cold weather this year.
''Paralysed by one centimetre of snow'', the daily paper Romania Libera headlines, reporting on a car accident in central Romania, which forced commuters to wait for hours, though the road was covered by only 8 centimetres of snow. ''Genuine winter hits Romania'' the daily paper Evenimentul Zilei notes. According to the paper, temperatures of minus 11.5 degrees Celsius were registered in the Balea Lake area. ‘Romania in the grip of bad weather’, the same paper reports, noting that rain and strong wind left tens of households flooded, damaged roofs and blocked roads. The daily newspaper Jurnalul National daily warns that the weather will get colder, and snow is expected to cover the mountains.
The snow layer in the Parang resort , on the Jiu Valley, measures 15 cm, at an altitude of 1,700 m. In the same area, thermometers showed minus 7 degrees Celsius. Although skiers will have to wait some more to hit the slopes, the first tourists are expected during the weekend. People who plan to visit Parang these days should know that they have access to the resort, after the first snow, by cable car or by cars equipped with winter tyres.
