The Turkish city of Antalya is currently playing host to the World Fencing Championships. The tournament began last week, on September the 30th, with the women's sabre knockout round. Monday was the last day for singles events, while Tuesday through Thursday the teams events are taking place.

So far, Romanian athletes have produced few, if any, surprises. The Romanian Fencing Federation set their goal to win at least one medal in this competition, and this expectation has already been fulfilled by Rares Dumitrescu, in the men's sabre competition.

Dumitrescu won the silver medal after losing to German Nicolas Limbach in the final, with the score 15-11. Before reaching the final, our athlete had to get past Mamoudou Keita from Senegal, Canadian Joseph Polossifakis, Spaniard Jaime Marti in the eighth-finals, Italian Aldo Montano in the quarterfinals, and eventually Tamas Decsi from Hungary in the semifinals.

Romanian athletes recorded the most notable performances in the sabre events of all categories, given that our country had two competitors ranking among the top eight. The other Romanian athlete on this list was Florin Zalomir, who only made it to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Hungarian Tamas Decsi.

Great expectations were placed on the women's épée team as well. Ana Maria Branza, silver medalist in last year's Beijing Olympics, was a member of the Romanian squad. In Antalya, she couldn't get past the eighth-finals, as she lost to Canadian Sherraine Schalm 9-10.

So far, our athletes have only recorded modest results in the teams events. Romanian teams rank 10th in the women's sabre event, and 19th in the men's foil.

The last day of the competition might bring Romania more medals, as it will see the teams competitions in men's sabre and women's épée.
