THE EUROPEAN FUTURE OF THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA 07/10/2009

A ruined economy, a politically subordinated justice system, a divided society traumatised by police abuse and the corruption of the former government – this is the inheritance passed on to the four pro-western parties that won by a small margin the parliamentary elections held in summer and formed the government together, as the Alliance for European Integration. The new foreign minister Iurie Leanca says the path to Europe is Chisinau’s number one priority in the following years:

“European integration, as I have said loud and clear, is the fundamental goal of the Republic of Moldova’s foreign and domestic policy. We have huge delays and have almost missed the integration train. We are aware that European integration means limiting the country’s sovereignty in certain areas, but our commitment is conscious and clear. We are aware that the European integration is a goal which is unfortunately not going to come true in a year or two, but is a medium-term goal. At present, we are not in an accession phase, but in a cooperation stage and it is for us to prove, in not too long a period, that we deserve a different type of treatment. And if this qualitative and qualitative change occurs, we can then talk about timeframes.”

The representatives of the new power admit that what the Republic of Moldova needs right now is urgent financial help from Europe, if only to overcome the economic crisis. One week after a trip to Brussels by Moldova’s prime minister Vlad Filat, the interim president Mihai Ghimpu also had talks with community officials on Tuesday and said he was happy with the support they promised for the signing of an association agreement. Mihai Ghimpu:

“It’s now for us to work and achieve what we wish for with the help of the European Union. In addition, obtaining the support for an association agreement is a very good thing for us.”
