“State employees are blocking public institutions” writes the daily paper ROMANIA LIBERA which quotes trade union leaders as saying that October 5th will see the biggest strike in the country’s recent history, more than half of the 1.4 million state employees striking for one day. They are discontent with the new law on the unified payment scheme in the public sector, which would diminish their incomes, with the massive layoffs scheduled for 2010 and with the 10 day forced leave imposed by the government, a forced leave to be taken by the end of the year.

“The day when the state takes a break: 750 thousand state employees are on strike” announces the daily paper GANDUL, underlining that Romania has locked its doors following the largest scale form of local protest of all times. Trade unions ask the government to cancel the most important measures initiated under pressure put by the IMF: the law on the unified payment scheme, collective layoffs and the unpaid leave, necessary for reaching and not exceeding the agreed budget deficit target by means of reducing salary expenses.

The journalists of the daily paper GANDUL write about the uncomfortable situation of the new cabinet, called Boc 2, recently instated after the Social Democratic Party withdrew from the government coalition following the dismissal of the Social Democratic Interior Minister, Dan Nica. The executive is caught in between the protest of the state employees and the IMF pressure, with no chance of an acceptable compromise from either of the sides.

“A warming-up all out strike” writes the daily paper ZIUA which says that Monday’s strike of state employees is just a preview of the big rally scheduled for Wednesday in Bucharest, on the International Day of Decent Work. Trade union leaders have warned that if their claims are not met, they will go on an indefinite all out strike scheduled for November 16th.

Employers say that if such a protest takes place, next spring Romania will default on payment; their stand is presented by the newspaper EVENIMENTUL ZILEI; the paper writes that “Business people side with the government against the strikers” saying that the measures taken by the Executive are necessary and compulsory and that state employees should show solidarity.
