Museum Night 2012

Noaptea Muzeelor This Saturday through Sunday, Romania will celebrate Museum Night for the eighth time. Previous editions of this event, meant to draw the public to museums, proved very successful. Over 3,000 institutions across Europe, including some 100 in Romania, will host exhibitions, music, film and theatre shows, screenings and interactive events. Admission will be free of charge.

In Bucharest, almost 30 cultural venues will hold their doors open the entire night to welcome technology, aviation and art fans. This year, like before, tens of thousands of visitors are expected. The venues that received the most visitors last year, around 20,000 each, are the ones that have the longest standing traditions in hosting this event. Among them are the George Enescu Museum, the Museum of History, the National Art Museum and the Labirint Museum – an interesting joint initiative of the Antipa Museum and the Museum of the Romanian Peasant.

The Dimitrie Leonida Museum of Technology is back in the circuit this year, following two years of absence. The Military Museum, on the other hand, will be closed to the public for the first time. Another interesting landmark is the Bellu Cemetery, where some of Romania’s most famed artists and writers are buried. The Romanian Aviation Museum will stay open the latest, until 5 am on Sunday morning. Event organizers have prepared a series of surprises for visitors this year. Anyone who visits at least three museums will get a chance to earn a bicycle or a mobile phone.

Museum Night 2012 promotes cycling, and visitors can rent bikes to travel between museums in Bucharest. The city’s public transport authority will also make available free buses between museums on the night of the event. This year, the organizers want to hold the first Museum Gala, to award prizes to the museums with the most visitors. Cultural venues in big cities across Romania will open their doors to visitors on Saturday night.

In Cluj, a tour of the city’s museums will be held for the first time. We recall that 70 institutions from across Romania took part in last year’s Museum Night. In Bucharest, a staggering 150,000 people visited the city’s museums in one night. World Museum Day has been celebrated across the planet every May 18th since 1977. Over 30,000 museums from 100 countries take part in this year’s festivities.
