a 64-a ediţie a Festivalului de Film de la Cannes For the 7th consecutive year Romania will be present at the most important event for European cinematography. This year’s edition of the Cannes Festival is special as it is devoted to iconic actress Marilyn Monroe who passed away 50 years ago.

Of the total of 60 features from 26 countries enlisted in the official competition, 22 are competing for the grand prize, the Palme d’Or. Among them is also Cristian Mungiu’s production “Beyond the Hills”, a book- to -screen adaptation of Tatiana Niculescu Bran’s novel “Deadly Confession”.

Written and directed by Mungiu, the feature film re-enacts the tragedy of 2005, when a young woman was killed in an exorcism ritual. The film marks Cristian Mungiu’s comeback to the official competition 5 years after winning the Palme d’Or for his drama, “4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days”. Romanian Cristian Iftimie will represent Romania with “The Camp in Razoare” in the Cinefondation section, an alternative Cannes competition devoted to school films Paul Negoescu’s “Horizon” was drafted in the “Semaine de la critique” section. Another Romanian, Adina Pintilie, will present her project called “Don’t Touch Me”, also in the Cinefondation competition, yet in the workshop panel. Film critic Manuela Cernat believes Romania is well represented in this year’s Cannes Festival:

Manuela Cernat: “What I believe should interest us in this 65th edition of the Cannes Festival is the tsunami of Romanian films that will sweep the screens. The fact that there’s a large number of Romanian productions enlisted in several competitions, within parallel programs on the film market is indicative of the fact that Romanian cinematography continues to be at the crest of the wave”.

Romania will be promoted at Cannes also in the ‘Marché du Film’ section, an event bringing together some 10,000 participants from 100 countries every year. Aside from facilitating profitable contracts between Romanian filmmakers and the international film industry, this section is aimed at supporting Romanians enlisted in the festival’s ongoing competitions. On the red carpet this year the public will see well-established actors such as Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman.

The president of the jury is Italian director Nanni Moretti. Joining him will be Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, German actress Diane Kruger, and French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gautier, an avowed filmgoer. Some 4,600 journalists from dozens of countries will cover the 2012 Cannes festival, while some 300 television crews will broadcast the prestigious event throughout the world.
