The two officials also discussed about the bilateral strategic partnership, given the celebration, this year, of 130 years since the establishment of the Romanian-Italian diplomatic ties. Emil Boc has urged Berlusconi to lift labour market restrictions for Romanian workers. According to PM Boc, Bucharest has a privileged relation with Rome at the economic, social, political and cultural levels and it is interested in boosting Italian investment in Romania. He also added that the several isolated cases of criminality involving Romania citizens should not affect bilateral relations. Emil Boc:
''We all have a 'zero-tolerance' policy against crime. Crime does not have citizenship and individual crime cases cannot and should not discredit an entire community.''
In his turn, Silvio Berlusconi laid emphasis on the economic issues approached during the talks:
''As regards bilateral trade, Italy is Romania's second largest partner and I believe we can strengthen this good co-operation with the help of some important Italian companies such as Enel and Ansaldo, operating in the energy sector.''
In order to carry out the projects that are already under way and boost bilateral ties, the 2nd Romanian-Italian intergovernmental summit will be organised early next year in Bucharest. The visit of the Romanian PM to Rome included meetings with representatives of the Romanian community in Italy, numbering over 1 million people. Some of the issues tackled at these meetings were related to contracts and legislation, to the need for Romanian language courses and for the promotion of the Romanian workers' rights and also to the discriminatory treatment and the negative image of Romanians in the Italian press. The two officials also discussed about the problems facing the consular missions, given that the Romanians in Italy asked for the opening of a new consulate in Padova.
