He also made a promise, only implied however, of running for the presidential elections to be held in November. The first part of the speech belonged to acting president Traian Basescu, who made an overview of his past mistakes, too brief in the eyes of his opponents, however. The president preferred to place emphasis on his achievements. Here is Traian Basescu.

“Romanians voted for a president who was able to take on the mission of leading Romania into the EU, of modernizing Romania, and of restructuring institutions. I have achieved just that. Over the past five years, my actions have had the purpose of making this term a productive one. I have never hesitated to criticize state institutions or politicians who stood in the way of reforms meant to modernize Romania. Sadly however, my criticism has often been seen as an attack. I have always called a spade a spade, because Romanians want a president who speaks the truth.”

The speech continued with the word of Basescu as a presidential candidate, who noted his medium-term political objectives.

“The constitutional reform required for the creation of a single-chamber parliament, clarifying relations between the Government and Parliament, as well as establishing means to unblock the political crisis, for the purpose of bringing clarity to the president’s position as mediator between the two state powers, as well as between the state and the people.”

While Prime Minister Boc brought predictable praise to the speech made by his former party leader, Basescu’s soon-to-be adversaries in the presidential elections brought nothing but criticism. Social Democrat leader and presidential candidate Mircea Geoana had this to say:

“This was a review of five years as president, in which he noted all his achievements, but overlooked his mistakes.”

Liberal leader Crin Antonescu, third favourite in the presidential race, left the room in the middle of Basescu’s speech, which he claims was nothing but publicity, and had no place being held in Parliament. Crin Antonescu:

“I don’t think it’s normal that the president make a speech about his achievement in front of Parliament, as they are not the ones who voted him. He can make this speech in front of the people.”

Last but not least, Marko Bela, leader of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania, claimed that the president’s review seemed more of a prime minister’s campaign, and had less to do with presidency.
