Prime Minister Designate of Romania, the Social-Democrat Victor Ponta on Tuesday announced the membership of the future government, which will have a limited term in office, until the parliamentary elections scheduled in November.

The cabinet is made up of 17 ministers and 4 ministers delegate, including technocrats and members of the Social-Liberal Union, which comprises the Social-Democratic Party, the National Liberal Party and the Conservative Party. Ponta spelled out the priorities of the future government, including an economic and fiscal vision providing stability and predictability, the creation of jobs, compliance with Romania’s external commitments, the protection of Romania’s natural resources, intolerance to corruption. The Prime Minister Designate underscored however that the top priority was:

Victor Ponta: ”The top priority of the government I’m going to nominate will be the observance of this country’s laws, without any exceptions, derogations and excuses, as we have had so many lately. I aim to ensure a good governance, transparence in particular, and efficiency. Certainly, we want to show that Romania can be ruled in a different way than it has been ruled of late.”

Ponta explained that by and large he had kept the structure of the old government so that there may be no disruptions in the governing act. He also kept a member of the government that fell in the wake of the no-confidence motion a few days ago, Minister for European Affairs Leonard Orban. Co-president of the Social-Liberal Union, Crin Antonescu claims that:

Crin Antonescu: ”The new government will be the political expression of the Social-Liberal Union, of our parties, our government programme, our objectives, but it will only be subject to the censorship of the Constitution, the law and Parliament as an institution.”

Two of the parties in the former ruling coalition, the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania and the Union for the Progress of Romania have announced that they will back the future cabinet if the government programme includes the measures they are interested in.

In exchange, the Liberal-Democratic Party has not made up its mind yet on whether to support the cabinet nominated by Ponta or not. The membership of the new cabinet and the government programme are subject to Parliament’s vote of confidence on May 7th.

We recall that the former government of Mihai Razvan Ungureanu was dismissed only two and a half months since it took office, in the wake of the no-confidence motion filed by the Social-Liberal Union.
