Almost half of the people with active lifestyles living in urban areas have bad eating habits and do not have regular meals. Also, 58% of them don’t do any sports. These are some of the conclusions of a study called 'Good habits, bad habits’, conducted by IPSOS Interactive Research and presented in Bucharest on Tuesday.

The study also shows that people that with a higher education most frequently skip meals – they also spend less time eating. According to the same study, such people choose their food by choosing what tastes best, without taking into account the nutritional value of the food in question - people pay less attention to things like vitamin and fat content. In terms of medical issues and personal hygiene, the news, again, isn’t so positive. 45% of respondents stated they do not undertake medical check ups every year, 22% never see a doctor for regular check-ups and 36% brush their teeth just once a day. On the other hand, a survey by the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs stresses the Romanians' appetite for culture, which is bigger in urban areas than in rural zones.

The biggest consumers of cultural products are the residents of Bucharest, followed by people living in the centre of the country. TV and radio continue to hold pride of place in terms of private consumption of culture. As for literature, Romanians are very much into romance, adventure and mystery books. Folk music ranks first among people's preferences, followed by Romanian pop music, Arabic-Gypsy pop music and foreign music. In terms of cinema, Romanians seem to prefer comedy, adventure and romantic films. Those who watch TV prefer news programs (77%), feature films and soap operas, while documentaries and cultural shows come last.

The study has also revealed the fact that, on average, a Romanian family spends less than 45 lei per month on culture. 15% of respondents don’t have a single book in their homes, while 6% of them are on the opposite end of the spectrum, with over 500 volumes on their bookcases. Another study, conducted at the request of the European Commission, shows that over 80% of Romanians think that smoking in public spaces should be banned. However, Romanian Health Minister Eugen Nicolaescu believes that Romania needs a 5 year transition period to enforce such a measure.
