bani Sorin Blejnar, President of the National Authority for Fiscal Administration, was dismissed by PM Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu. Blejnar had been given two months to collect 2 billion euros, equalling 1.5 percent of the GDP, following the discovery of tax frauds. The Authority is regarded as the country’s spearhead in the fight against tax evasion. Dan Suciu, spokesman for the Government, presented the official statement motivating Blejnar’s sacking.

Dan Suciu: “Experts commissioned by the PM analysed the National Authority for Fiscal Administration’s management capability, in its current structure. The PM said from the start that he wishes to change the entire system, not only people.”

Blejnar’s dismissal was no random act. Supported by the Liberal Democratic Party, the main group in the ruling coalition, Blejnar has never had a reputation to live up to his position. His name was mentioned in several media investigations, among others, on shady personal affairs and complicity in a large network of corrupt border police agents. Although never proven in a court of law, various alleged misdeeds have turned Blejnar into a burden for the Liberal Democrats, already free falling in the polls.

Political analysts believe Blejnar’s very association with the Liberal Democratic Party is the reason why the group decided to dismiss him in an election year. On the other hand, Blejnar’s dismissal doesn’t mean he will no longer serve the National Authority for Fiscal Administration on a different level. Blejnar himself said he might be named head of the Department for Large Wealth Control – a body he created himself, after talks with the IMF.

This Department becomes operational after President Traian Basescu passed the law on extended confiscation of fortunes. The law creates the possibility for confiscating assets held by persons convicted to at least 5 years in prison. While state institutions are attempting to draw as much money as possible to the state budget, the High Court of Cassation and Justice acquitted George Becali, financier of the football club Steaua Bucharest, in the so-called “Suitcase” file. The wealthy landowner and recent Euro MP was accused of offering 1.7 million euros to another team, in exchange for at least a draw against one of Steaua’s rivals.
