Romania needs a more performing education system, one that looks to the future and not back to the past, said Romania’s president Traian Basescu today at a public debate on education laws. He added now is the time to reform of the education system. The president said he was disappointed with the law makers who drafted the new education law in just a few weeks, without holding talks with the members of the presidential specialist committee.

Romania’s football vice-champion FC TImisoara, from the south-west, is today meeting at home the German side VfB Stuttgard in the first leg of the Champions League play-offs. The champion Unirea Urziceanu will go straight into the groups stage of this competition. In the previous round, Timisoara eliminated this year’s UEFA cup winner, the Ukrainian side Shaktior Donetzk. On THursday, Romania’s 4 teams playing in the Europa Leage will play the first leg of their play-off games. Dinamo Bucharest will meet the Czechs from Slovan Liberec, CFR Cluj, from the west the Bosnian side FK Sarajevo, FC Vaslui, from the east the Greek side AEK Athens, and Steaua Bucharest the Irish team St Patrick’s.

In Romania, the number of confirmed cases of swine flu has reached 256, but no deaths have been reported. The health ministry in Bucharest said the flu will peak in the period February-April 2010. According to the latest report by the World Health Organization, the number of infected people has exceeded 177,000 worldwide, while 1450 people have died as a result.
