The first congress of Romanian journalists started today in the south-western town of Drobeta Turnu Severin. Attending the opening, Romania’s president Traian Basescu thanked the Romanian media for the courage and professionalism with which it covered the events in Kishinew following the legislative elections in April. The theme of the congress, headed Language-Message- Freedom, is the situation of the Romanian press outside Romania’s borders. The participants are journalists from Romania, the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Serbia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania and representatives of the Romanian parliament, government and civil society. On Saturday, debates will continue in the Serbian town of Kladovo, where Basescu will meet the representatives of the Romanian community in Timoc, the largest in north-eastern Serbia.

Romania’s representative to the International Monetary Fund, Mihai Tanasescu, said the Fund agreed to Bucharest’s request that the second tranche of the loan be used for current payments such as pensions and salaries. The IMF mission warned that the budget deficit may exceed 8% of the GDP by the end of the year and called for a cut in public spending.

The Romanian football team Steaua Bucharest on Thursday night qualified for the Europa League play-offs after beating 3-1 the Scottish side Motherwell in a away game counting for the preliminary round 3. Steaua won the home game 3-nil. In the same stage of the competition, Romania is represented by Dinamo Bucharest, FC Vaslui, from the east and CFR Cluj from the north-east. The vice-champion FC Timisoara, from the west, will go into a play-off game to qualify in the Champions League groups. The champion Unirea Urziceni from the south goes straight into the groups stage.
