Trouble Brewing within the Ruling Coalition |
(2012-04-03) |
Last updated: 2012-04-05 13:43 EET |
The turmoil within the Liberal Democratic Party, the main party in the ruling coalition in Romania, continues with the exclusion of MEP Cristian Preda, just two months ahead of the local elections. Preda was blamed for his critical statements about the party, but also because he announced he would no longer support the liberal-democrat candidate for mayor of Bucharest, Silviu Prigoana. In fact, in the past two years, Preda’s reproaches have become more and more virulent. However, the vice-president of the party, Toader Paleologu, has condemned the rush in which the decision was made.
Toader Paleologu: “I pleaded for more patience, but, unfortunately, I was not listened to. People are not patient enough.”
On the other side, those who voted for the exclusion of Cristian Preda say the latter’s public option not to support the party’s candidate has placed the MEP outside the Liberal – Democratic Party. Here is the president of the party, Emil Boc:
Emil Boc: “You cannot have an MEP, a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, who, in an election battle, supports a candidate other than his own party’s candidate. From this point of view, the decision of the Liberal Democratic Party is extremely firm.”
Cristian Preda, however, says his exclusion is an abuse supported by a wrong political decision and a trap that the party leadership fell into. He has also stated he will do his own justice. Tensions within the Liberal Democratic party occurred against the background of the problems the party has with the election strategy, its candidates and the exodus of staff. Among those who have left the party is its former vice-president, Sorin Frunzaverde, one of the party founders, who will now run for president of the Caras Severin County Council as representative of the opposition Social Liberal Union. He has been joined by the mayor of the Southern town of Slatina, Darius Valcov.
Many have decided to leave the party as opinion polls have revealed a dramatic drop in the ruling party’s popularity. Following the decline of the Liberal Democratic Party, the opposition might win Senate majority, but that very much depends on the vote of the independent senator Mircea Geoana, former president of the opposition Social Democratic Party. Feeling the good vibes of the moment, on April 17th the Social Liberal Union will file a motion of censure against the government headed by Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, whom they blame for giving in to the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians’ blackmail regarding the setting up of a Hungarian Language Department at the University of Medicine in Targu Mures, central Romania.
