Sorin Frunzaverde Darius Valcov, mayor of Slatina, in the south of the country, also left the Liberal Democratic Party. Others members have done the same, as the party sees plummeting approval rates and the autumn elections are approaching. The Social-Liberal opposition, which decided to withdraw from Parliament until the general elections in sign of protest, is aware that the current and possible future defections from the Liberal Democratic Party can help it defeat the current parliamentary majority.

The latter is represented by the alliance made up of the Liberal Democratic Party, the Union for Romania’s Progress and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania. The prospect has almost become a fact at the Senate, as the scales could tilt towards either camp, through the vote of the only independent senator, Mircea Geoana, a former member of the Social Democratic Party, in opposition.

But the latter also wants to hold the majority in the Chamber of Deputies. That is why it is actively attempting to revoke its speaker Roberta Anastase. The announcement was made by Social Democratic Party leader Victor Ponta, who added that the parliamentary groups of the Social Liberal Union are preparing to file a motion of censure on April 17th.

They accuse the Ungureanu government of caving in to pressure from the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians as to the setup of a Hungarian department at the University of Medicine in Targu Mures, in the centre, as well as to foreign companies willing to buy national energy resources. Until the motion of censure is submitted, the opposition MPs will attend the meetings of the two chambers only for legal debates regarding the European mechanism for cooperation and judiciary verification and for the ratification of Romania’s new agreements with Serbia and the Republic of Moldova.

In response to the situation in the Senate, the government says it will attempt to obtain voters from the MPs outside the coalition. The government only has a majority of two MPs in the Chamber of Deputies. However, ensuring a quorum in Parliament has been a challenge in recent months.
