The pull-out of Romanian troops from Iraq is marked today by a military ceremony. It is for the first time since World War 2 that Romanian army units are marching under the Arch of Triumph in Bucharest to mark the end of a foreign mission. In 2003, Romania sent almost 850 military to Iraq. The last remaining units returned to the country last week. The mission of the Romanian military deployed in Iraq covered security, reconstruction and humanitarian actions. During the 6 year stay in Iraq of the Romanian military, 2 two soldiers were killed and 6 were wounded.

An International Monetary Fund mission is assessing in Bucharest the economic programme established with Romania as part of a loan agreement signed last spring. Bucharest wishes to convince the Fund to increase the targeted budget deficit level from 4.6 to 5.5% of the GDP for this year. Last spring, Romania made a foreign loan of almost 20 billion euros to fight the impact of the economic crisis. Most of the money comes from the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission.
