A Review of Romanian-Russian Relations |
(2012-03-28) |

Moscow has hosted a new round of consultations between Russia and Romania, aimed at consolidating bilateral relations and strengthening political dialogue between the two states. State Secretary with Romanian Foreign Ministry, Bogdan Aurescu and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov reviewed the status and prospects of bilateral relations, particularly in the field of economy and politics.
The two officials underscored good bilateral cooperation in the economic field. This might positively impress on political dialogue, Bogdan Aurescu argued. According to the Romanian Foreign Ministry, in 2011, the volume of two-way trade exceeded 4.3 billion dollars, up14% as compared to the previous year. Aurescu and Titov also discussed Russia’s relations with the EU and NATO. Romania can help bring closer the Russian Federation and the EU, and open up dialogue to waive visas for Russian citizens, the Romanian official added.
Another delicate matter on the agenda was the deployment of elements of the US anti-ballistic shield on Romanian territory, a shield that will pass into the hands of NATO after the NATO summit in Chicago. The decision has sparked Russia’s anger, Russian authorities have repeatedly demanded written guarantees from all the parties involved that the shield is not targeting the Russian Federation. Bogdan Aurescu outlined progress made insofar as implementing the Romanian-US agreement is concerned:
Bogdan Aurescu: “We discussed the NATO-Russia agenda, in the run-up to the NATO summit in Chicago to be held in May.We took the opportunity to describe to our Russian partners the degree of implementing elements of the anti-ballistic shield, also with a view to its broader impact at NATO level. We’ve pointed out that Romania supports the reconciliation of NATO and Russia in this field, as agreed upon at the 2010 NATO summit in Lisbon. We are in favour of a NATO-Russia partnership that should serve the interests of both parties”.
Foreign State Secretary Bogdan Aurescu said Romania and Russia would extent consultations in order to solve the Transdniestr issue. Aurescu hailed the recent progress made in thawing the conflict in the pro-Russian breakaway region in the east of the Republic Moldova. The Romanian official said that any solution should observe the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, a view his Russian counterpart seemed to share.
Secretary Aurescu also voiced his optimism ahead of the following round of “5+2” negotiations to be held in Vienna in April, that will bring together representatives of Moldova, Transnistria, the OSCE, Russia, the Ukraine and international observers from the US and EU.
